3 Drugstore Beauty Items to Avoid

I’m definitely a lover of drugstore beauty for its variety and affordability, but they can’t all be winners. On my latest visit to Walmart and CVS, I came across a few beauty items to avoid.

What I learned is that what may be a hit for some people can be a big bust for others. Which is the case for one item that has been a hit all over Instagram and TikTok.

I also went into a deep dive in the reviews section and a lot of people really enjoyed these products. But again, everyone has an opinion so I thought I’d share mine.

Essence Lash Princess

Probably the most disappointing for me. After hearing all the rave reviews about this product, I truly had high hopes. Unfortunately, it did not wear well. However, I liked how it applied and made my lashes fuller and longer.

However, after my workday, I was left with a dark shadow under my eyes and along my eyelids. My husband even though I had been crying. I can’t imagine what people at work must have thought!! At first, I thought it may be because of my oily skin. But my other mascara, both high-end and drugstore, never did that.

I looked around the CVS site for similar claims like my own, but could only find reviews like the one from Carrie.

Better than L’Oréal, maybelline, PUR, Estée Lauder and Lancôme, I’ve tried many many mascaras, this is it.

Hard Candy Plumping Serum Volumizing Lip Gloss

I really wanted this to work, but such a disappointment. First, the color was not right for my skin tone. I purchased the color ‘First Kiss’ and it looked like it was going to be a soft pink. However, it applied a little to light for my face – it washed me out.

Second, it did not give me any ‘plumping’ and or volumizing. Upon application, you do feel a bit of a cooling sensation. You do not get that stinging as I’ve experienced with other plumping serums. I don’t even mind the stinging as long as it does what it claims.

Once again, not many people shared my opinion. Here’s a review from Walmart’s site.

Holy Grail, Plumping Primer

Holy Grail Item Right Here! I use it as a lip primer for before makeup, putting it on prior to other primers and letting it sit, it really plumps and removes fine lines from the lip area. IT DOES BURN!! It isn’t a gentle plump, HOWEVER, IT WORKS! So, if you’re a fan of more than just a light tingle, this is awesome and actually works.

CoverGirl Lash Blast Lash & Brow Serum

I can’t remember where I saw an ad for this serum, but when I did, I was on the hunt. I’ve been looking for a serum to make my brows fuller. When I spotted it at Walmart, I grabbed it.

High hopes for this product as I’m such a fan of CoverGirl. However, it did not pass the wear test. I decided to try this out one day before work. I used the transparent serum to tame my brows. But as the day wore on, I noticed some white residue on my brows.

It looks like skin, sort of how skin peels when you have a sunburn. This is not something you want to be walking around with. I think this serum is best used at night. But because I also would prefer a serum to wear during the day, I have to give it a thumbs down.

I will say, it is hydrating for my lashes. I didn’t experience the flaking on my lashes. However, I did apply a coat of mascara after application so that may be the difference. I will continue to use it because I do feel like it nourishes my lashes and I’ve noticed less breakage.

Here’s what another user wrote:

Longer eyelashes

I’ve been using this for about a month now and I can definitely see results. My eyelashes are longer and healthier. I use in the mornings before applying my mascara. Would definitely recommend!Reviewed
