Best Winter Coats for Women (2022)

Some love it and some hate it, but winter is coming! We’re sharing the best winter coats for women to help you stay warm all season long. From puffers to maxi coats, here are the best to pair with your favorite winter outfits.

The first thing to consider when looking to purchase a new coat is where you will be wearing it. The winter season can be short-lived here in the south. In Texas, we see a drastic temperature drop around Thanksgiving.

We may experience temperatures in the 40s, but that can be a walk in the park for those living up north. You will have to consider other weather conditions such as snow, sleet, or freezing temps.

Also, consider the length of the coat. Wearing long coats will offer more protection from the elements, and help you stay warm by trapping body heat.

THE BEST COAT FABRICS TO WEAR IN WINTER

If you are in a region that experiences heavy snowfall, you will want to look for coats that are water-resistant. The most common materials used may be polyester, nylon, or wool. Other synthetic fabrics may include polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyurethane (PU), and silicone elastomer.

If you live in a cold climate with strong winds, you may want to consider wool for extra warmth. While many companies also offer coats with down (goose or duck feathers) I prefer synthetic insulators for a water-resistant option.

According to The North Face, down is lighter and weight-for-weight it’s warmer than synthetic insulation. But down fails to insulate when it’s wet. Synthetic insulation, on the other hand, maintains its insulating power in damp conditions making it a great option.

NEUTRAL WINTER COATS

If you don’t experience prolonged winter weather, I suggest you find a coat you can wear with multiple outfits. This will not only be more affordable but save some closet space. Winter coats can be a little pricy but there is no need to buy multiple to get you by.

Here are a few neutral long-coat options that you can wear with many winter outfits.

TEDDY + SHERPA COATS

These coats are the perfect cozy for a cold winter day or night. The soft and plush material is great for added warmth and feel. Long teddy coats can feel like you’re wrapped in your favorite blanket. I also love sherpa for added texture to your winter outfits.

PUFFER + QUILTED COATS

These insulated coats and winter jackets are probably the most versatile. If you are in really cold temperatures, a puffer jacket may be ideal as it has greater insulation than quilted coats. Quilted coats are ideal for milder winter conditions.

The outer shell of puffer coats is usually a thin woven material making it lightweight and water and wind-resistant. You will also have to consider the fill.

As mentioned above, duck or goose feathers may keep you warmer than synthetic fillers, but will be more expensive and take longer to dry. There are also puffers that come with a removable hood.
