This post is all about winter capsule wardrobe and what to include in your closet this season.
Dressing for the cold doesn’t have to be a drag when you have a winter capsule wardrobe. Not only are capsule wardrobes going to save you money, but they take all the guesswork out of everyday dressing.
Staying warm in the winter months means multiple layers of clothing. But these items can still be functional and stylish. Transitioning your wardrobe between seasons may include just a few tweaks or additions to your current wardrobe. It shouldn’t be a complete overhaul.
For those living in the south like me, you may not need to invest in a parka, but adding in a nice coat will get you through the season. We’ll be breaking down how to build your ultimate winter wardrobe so you can focus on enjoying the holiday season.
HOW TO BUILD A WINTER CAPSULE WARDROBE
A capsule wardrobe is a collection of pieces that you can mix and match to create multiple outfits. It allows you to save money and time by including clothing items that are classic and high quality. You may include a few trendy items, but the bulk of the items should consist of neutrals.
The concept behind this style of dressing is to keep you from shopping online for the latest item every year and instead “shopping” your closet to create outfits in new ways.
The first thing to consider is your style. Everyday dressing is all about staying true to your style, so don’t be influenced by any capsule wardrobe list. Instead, these lists are there to guide you and give you some ideas to include in your closet.
Before purchasing anything, take a look at the items you already have. There is no need to buy a new denim jacket if the one in your closet is still wearable. I’ve had the same Target denim jacket for 5 years and it’s still one of the most-reached items in the fall and winter seasons.

WINTER CAPSULE WARDROBE CHECKLIST
Winter weather can be all over the place so making sure you are prepared is key. This list is comprised of clothing items for everyday dressing. Obviously, the holidays are here so you may be attending a holiday party here and there, but we’re going to keep it to the basics.
Let’s think of cozy knits sweaters, sweater dresses, jeans, and ankle boots. Items that will help keep you cozy and warm in winter but also allow you to stay stylish.
Tops
The tops you include are your base layer. You’ll want to find something that is thin, usually long-sleeved, and can be worn under sweaters and jackets. I prefer more neutral tones so I can get more wear out of the item. Look for tops in the colors white, black, beige, and even a black and white striped top.
Bottoms
A pair of jeans is such a great winter weather wardrobe staple. They are comfortable and look great paired with a cozy sweater. Another item to include is trousers. A pair of black trousers can be worn dressed up or down and elevates a casual look.
Outerwear
Something to consider when searching for outerwear is the weather where you live. You may make it through the winter season with a merino wool coat or you’ll need to consider something heavier like a parka for your outer layer. Whatever will keep you warm and dry. This is probably going to be the priciest item in your closet. For this reason, I would choose something neutral either beige or black to get the most wear. Other items to consider are puffer coats, sherpa pullovers, and trench coats.
Accessories
The accessories you choose should be easy to remove and store. You may wear a scarf and gloves on your commute to the office, but you’ll want to be sure you can fit them in your purse if you don’t want to lug them around the building.
Shoes
Your winter footwear should be comfortable and keep your toes warm. Time to put away the sandals and opt for sneakers, ankle boots, knee-high boots, or, my favorite, pointed flats.
