This post is all about how to make outfit collages. This post contains affiliate links at no extra cost to you.
Let’s be honest, most of us don’t have a graphic design background. When I first started my blog and posting on my LTK storefront, I wondered how do influencers make product collages look so good?
If you’re like me, aesthetics are very important. But creating a consistent and beautiful collection of product collages can be a little difficult to start.
In this post, I’m sharing my step-by-step Canva collage tutorial, plus how I find inspiration to create my LTK post templates.
HOW TO MAKE OUTFIT PRODUCT COLLAGES ON CANVA
Why You Should Make Product Collages
Bloggers and Influencers use product collages to showcase their fashion, beauty, and home finds (among other things) to their audience.
Product image collages give your audience so much to see at once. You can also create style guides, gift guides, and new outfit ideas.
When you showcase a styled outfit, beauty products, or a collection of your favorite living decor items, it’s easier for them to picture those products on themselves or in their home.
This is why it is a great addition to your affiliate marketing game.
If you are an LTK influencer, collages are a great way to gain new followers and cater to your followers.
The best part? You can repurpose fashion collages for blog posts, social media platforms, the liketoknow.it app, and style boards.
How to Make a Collage of Pictures on Canva
To begin, you need to sign up for Canva. There is a free version, but if you are looking to have the ability to remove the background (very important) from product images, you’ll need to sign up for the Pro Version.
Canva Pro is $14.99 per month or you can save 16% by paying the full annual fee of $119.99.
Once you are signed up, you’ll need to figure out what platform you are creating for. Each platform requires certain dimensions for a better viewer experience.
SUGGESTED PLATFORM DIMENSIONS
- LTK (Formerly LIKEtoKNOW.it ) – 1080 x 1350px
- Instagram Story – 1080 x 1920px
- Instagram Post – 1080 x 1350px
- Blog Graphic – 800 – 1200px
- Pinterest – 1000 x 1500px
Now that you are signed up and know what image ratio you need, let’s move on to the creation process.
Step 1: Open a new project
The first step when you create a new design on Canva is choosing a specific dimension for your collage.
Select from the pre-populated dimensions in the drop-down, or click the ‘custom size’ box at the bottom of the drop-down.
There, you can insert your desired width and height. For example, if you are making an LTK collage, you would enter the dimensions 1080 width and 1350 height with a px for its measurement.
Step 2: Capture your images
The easiest way to capture an image from a retailer’s website is to use your computer’s screenshot function.
I recently learned how to narrow down my screen selection by doing the ‘command + shift + 4’ combo on my Mac.
This allows me to capture only the image on the screen that I select and not my whole computer screen. Drag the crosshair to select the area of the screen you want to capture.
You could also use your own images to show how an outfit looks on.
Step 3: Upload images to Canva
Once you have collected your images and they are saved to your computer’s desktop. You will need to upload the screenshots of products to Canva to start building your fashion collage.
On your Canva workspace, you will see some functions on the left. Select ‘Uploads.’
Then, select all the images that you need from your desktop folder (or wherever you saved the images.)
Step 4: Design your background
You can definitely just plop your images to the default white background, but remember, you want to make your collages stand out!
The best way to do this is by including a title, adding some color, and don’t forget your watermark or identifier.
You want to start building your brand and make your collages recognizable. This will create brand awareness and will also make your life so much easier.
PRO TIP: Create a Pinterest board with aesthetic inspirations. Look at fonts, color schemes, and imagery. If a font you like is not available in Canva’s font directory, you can always buy it off Creative Market (personal choice) and upload your brand-specific font to Canva for use.
You can use any of the default colors provided by Canva or upload your own. You can add your ‘Brand Colors’ in your brand profile.
Using the same colors and fonts in your collages is going to increase brand awareness and familiarity.
Step 5: Add a title
Adding a title to your collage will help your audience identify what the product collage is about. Are you sharing ‘Dresses Under $50’, ‘Amazon Home Decor’, ‘Wedding Guest Dresses for Fall’?
Try to stick to a theme. You could also create outfits in your collage. In this case, tell your audience where you would wear the outfit. Is this a teacher’s outfit idea, date night idea, WFH outfit idea?
Click on the ‘Text’ selection on the left and it will bring up a ‘Add a Text Box’ option.
Above your workspace, you will have options to edit the text box. You can use different fonts, change the color, make it bold, adjust the line and letter spacing and so much more.
For the sake of this tutorial, we’ll keep it pretty basic, but definitely play around with the functions when you get a chance.
Step 6: Build your collage
Here’s the fun part. You can now start adding in all your images. You should already have your images uploaded to Canva.
Now you can start adding them in. Just click the collage image you want to add and it will transfer it to your workspace.
Hold down the right mouse button and drag it to where you want. You can also click on the corners and drag to make the image bigger or smaller.
Once you have it where you want, you will want to take away the background. This creates a better look.
Here’s where that Canva Pro subscription comes into play. The background remover is only available in the pro version. Trust me, you’re going to get so much use out of this function.
Click on the image and then click the ‘Edit photo’ prompt on top. This will open up the different editing tools available to you.
On the top left, you’ll see the ‘BG Remover’. Click this and it will remove the background in seconds.
Repeat the process for all of your images. Then, adjust the position of each product to your liking.
Step 7: Make it Personal
Finally, I would also suggest adding your brand identifier to your collages.
This can be your social handle, your LTK handle, your blog URL, or your logo. This way, people can start to identify your products and style with your brand.
This is also a great discovery tool if you plan on sharing your product collages across your social platforms.
People can easily find you if they want to see more!
