capsule wardrobe shoe must haves

If you’re like me, your shoe wardrobe is probably the one article of clothing that has overrun your shoe rack — I find it difficult to pass up on a good pair of shoes.

And while I tend to stay within my neutral personal style, I do notice that I have a lot of shoes that don’t get much wear.

That’s why I’m sharing the best capsule wardrobe shoes that won’t just get a ton of wear, but will still be in style for the long run.

To begin, you’ll want to take inventory of your current shoe collection. The best place to start is by removing styles that no longer bring you joy.

Shoes that are collecting dust, should immediately be removed. Stick to wardrobe staples in neutral colors.

These pairs of shoes will get you the most wear and will pair well with most outfits.

Ankle Boots

Ankle boots are perfect for the fall season.  They offer coverage without being too covered up like most OTK boots (over-the-knee boots.)

One of the more popular styles of ankle boots is Chelsea boots. Made of leather, they are great for the cooler months and offer a more casual feel.

If you’re looking for a more dressy pair of boots, you could try a sleeker style in black leather. Get a pair with a small heel for an elevated look.

Look for mid to high-shaft ankle boots with pointed toes. You could opt for a square toe if you insist on a newer trend style.

Ballet Flats

Ballet flats have made a comeback in 2024. And while they seem like a trendier shoe, they truly are a timeless style.

To keep it classic, opt out of trends like Mary Jane styles and embellishments. Instead, look for plain flat shoes.

You could also include a slingback if you want to change it up.

Ballet Flats are also great for everyday wear. They are not only office-appropriate but also look great with a pair of cropped denim and a white tee for the weekend.

Sneakers

One of the best shoes to have for your casual days is a pair of sneakers. More importantly, a pair of white sneakers.

White sneakers are going to look great with just about every outfit. From denim shorts to dresses, a white casual sneaker is such a versatile shoe selection.

Some classic shoe styles include a pair of Converse high tops and New Balance sneakers for a more athleisure look.

Again, these styles work well with denim and also look great with tennis dresses for the warmer months.

Another one of the timeless staples we’ve seen this past year is Adidas Samba sneakers.

They have come out with a ton of colorways but try to stick to neutral colors to get more wear.

High Heels

If you are looking for work shoes, then a pair of heels is a must. Not only are neutral heels so versatile, but they instantly elevate any outfit.

Pay close attention to the heel height. If you find yourself on your feet most of the day, try to keep it under 3″.

Try to include at least two pairs of heels in your capsule wardrobes. One black pair and one in a tan or nude color.

If you’re looking for something with a little more interest than a classic pump, you could add a pair with an ankle strap or other strappy heels.

Strappy heels add some interest to your outfit and can differentiate your going-out shoes from your work shoes.

You could also try high-heeled slingbacks which are chic for the office or everyday wear.

Tall Boots

Tall boots are another colder-weather option to include in your capsule wardrobe.

The pair of boots to add to your own capsule wardrobes depends on where you live.

If you live somewhere that experiences extremely cold weather, you may want to invest in more tall boots than those living in the south.

A pair of knee-high boots, or riding boots, is a great addition for the fall and winter. They look great, are timeless, and can double as your rain boots (depending on the material.)

Look for water-resistant materials if you live somewhere that experiences a lot of snow or rainfall. The best options are rubber, neoprene, synthetic leather, and vinyl.

Sandals

I can’t even tell you how many pairs of sandals I own — but it’s a lot! Our summers can get really hot, so flat sandals are a must here.

There are so many styles to choose from but I’d suggest one pair for the pool or beach and one that can be dressed up.

Slide sandals are my go-to when I want comfort and elevated style. If you want to elevate your outfit even more, look for low-heeled sandals.

Stay away from more trendier styles like gladiator sandals.

Loafers

Loafers are another great wardrobe staple that can be worn as workwear and weekend wear.

They are classic and timeless. Stay clear of trends like lug soles and other chunky styles. Look for a classic design with rubber soles.

Horsebit loafers or tassel loafers offer a little interest to the shoe and are equally a timeless look. You could also look for slipper loafers for added comfort.
